My husband is from the South, and in the South, you drink sweet tea! Although sweet tea is delicious, there's a LOT of sugar in it. So for this nutrient-packed tea recipe, I was part inspired by a trip to Panama and part in need of a healthier alternative to sweet tea.
I'll just start by thanking Ben for the inspo to create this post. He drank, he loved, he asked. And, I feel like a big jerk because I drink this stuff every day and didn't even think to share the recipe. Let's progress shall we?!
In Panama, we stayed at the RADDEST spot on a deserted island in Bocas Del Toro (San Cristobal!). Our host was this super cool, giant, Scandinavian health nut and one of our daily treats were his teas! Basically he would just boil a bunch of turmeric, tea bags and whatever other herbs/delicate greens he had laying around (watercress was my fave) and serve it to us either hot or cold. Absolutely delicious!!
I mean, how cool to steep these superfoods in your tea right?!
Once we got home, hubs developed this deep love for the Organic Green Tea and Lemonade at Trader Joe's. Sounds healthy but there's a pile of sugar in it too! Armed with fresh inspiration from Panama and a need to replace said sugary drank, I started experimenting.
What I came up with literally makes me feel SO good, I make sure to drink it with a squeeze of lemon with my supplements every single morning. I can almost feel the nutrients and my husband LOVES it!
I make a batch every week and it lasts a full 7 days!! I will say, if I'm lazy or don't have all the ingredients, I get super creative and sometimes I'll just use turmeric and ginger with the tea bags. Make this your own!
Get It:
10-12 teabags (I use herbal, no caffeine because hubby drinks at night sometimes)
1 large handful turmeric fingers
1 large handful ginger fingers
1 tbsp Tahitien vanilla extract
1/4 cup manuka or local/raw/organic honey
3 sprigs lavender (optional)
10 sprigs watercress (optional)
2 lemons-juiced (optional)
2 cinnamon sticks (optional)
Equipment:
Small pot
Strainer
Wooden spoon
Large beverage dispenser with spigot (3 gallons)
Glass, ice and stainless steel straw
Do it:
Cut the ginger and turmeric in the 1/4 inch rounds (just any small rough chop will do
Toss them in with fresh water, bring to a boil and simmer for 40 minutes
Add the tea bags, vanilla, honey, lavender, watercress and lemon juice
Let steep/cool off the heat for 15 minutes
Fill 1/2 of the beverage dispenser with cold, fresh water
Place the strainer over the beverage dispenser and strain mixture
Fill the rest with more cold, fresh water
Cover with a lid or foil and place in the fridge
Enjoy Vixens, live to thrive,
Lauren
